This position is located in the Accounts Division of the Pension Administration of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF). The Accounts Department monitors pension contributions and overpayments of benefits, performs bank reconciliations and conducts periodic financial reports. Accountant in charge and reports to the Deputy Chief of Accounts.
Within the delegated authority, the Accounting Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
- Verifies source documents for completeness, accuracy and validity of charges.
- Investigates erroneous charges and takes appropriate corrective accounting action.
- Communicates with member organizations regarding missing documentation or any other issues related to discrepancies between their accounts and those maintained by the Pension Fund Secretariat.
- Reconcile and review suspense accounts and ensure proper clearance procedures are followed.
- Assists in processing pension contribution reporting from UNJSPF member organizations. This includes, among other things, calculating, inputting and checking pension contributions for accuracy and communicating discrepancies to supervisors.
- Assists in calculating contribution amount for pension validation/recovery.
- Prepares worksheets and assists in preparation of financial statements.
- Audits various accounting transactions, e.g., pension contributions, benefit overpayments and recoveries, bank credits and debits, fees, etc., to ensure accuracy of accounts and compliance with relevant staff rules, UNJSPF regulations and rules, ST/AI issues or practices .
- Provides guidance and training to colleagues as needed.
- Supervises other general service personnel as needed.
- Prepares drafts/memorandums and/or cables to various offices, departments and foreign offices.
- Responds to queries of pension participants, beneficiaries, member organizations and other units/departments.

High School Diploma or equivalent.
A minimum of seven years of experience in accounting, finance or related field is required
Minimum of one year post-employment financial or operational work experience
Facility projects are required.
Experience working with the UN General System or other comparable international
Organizations are desirable.
Experience in Integrated Pension Administration System (IPAS) or similar ERP system is preferred.
One year or more experience in data analysis or related field preferred.
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the advertised post, fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowing another official UN language is an advantage.

The UNJSPF is an inter-agency body established in 1949 by the United Nations General Assembly. The pension fund provides benefits in 17 currencies to approximately 80,000 beneficiaries residing in more than 190 countries and serves more than 130,000 participants operating in 25 member countries. This post is subject to local recruitment in accordance with Staff Rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for consideration for appointment to the General Services and related departments at the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not cleared the GGST at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting their application. Staff members who have been appointed for a fixed term, continuing or permanent appointment as a result of passing a previous examination recognized by the Office of Human Resources Management and who have held such appointment continuously, are not required to take a new examination.
