Description

We are hiring a Law Clerk to assist the criminal defense team in the Pikeville Trial Office.


The Kentucky DPA seeks individuals who have expressed a desire to help the poorest and often the most vulnerable in their communities. The ideal candidate has recently completed all coursework at an ABA accredited law school to obtain a JD degree and plans to take the next available bar exam or has recently received their license to practice law. This individual demonstrates exceptional planning/organizational skills, is self-directed and comfortable working with their defense team including attorneys, investigators, alternative sentencing staff and office administrative staff. We seek to hire individuals who consider it a privilege to represent our clients, and we do so on behalf of the people of Kentucky.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Clerks assist attorneys representing indigent defendants by providing assistance such as legal research and writing.
  • Interviewing clients and other duties as required.
  • Duties are primarily performed in both office and courtroom settings.
  • travel required.

Minimum requirements

Education: Graduation from a college or university with a bachelor's degree and a minor in paralegal studies or completion of a two-year program in paralegal studies or completion of twenty-four semester hours at an American Bar Association accredited law school.  ( Click Hare )


Experience, Training, or Skills: None


Substitute education for experience: None


Alternative Education Experience: Experience as a paralegal or legal secretary will substitute for the required two-year paralegal study program on a year-for-year basis.

Probationary period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
